well, it's not because 18,000 people watched the landing of the A380, it is more a present by LH to the city of Munich. The city will celebrate it's 850th anniversary and LH has very good connections to the city therefore they are going to brand one of the first A380s with the name of the city.
What will happen to D-ABVL after that? Actually this B747 carries the name...

The ironic thing is that I don't see MUC being an A380 base. Maybe I'm being too naive but I've always had this mental picture in my head of MUC being full of A333/A343/A346s flying in all directions.

They used to say in the summer of 2009 but in the article it says "in 2009". On LH's official homepage it says delivery in summer 2009: http://a380.lufthansa.com/en/index.php . Useless to mention that Airbus is currently reviewing the schedule for the deliveries in 2009.
I think it would be mandatory that Bavarian pilsner be served, by the liter, on any airplane named "Munich." The A380's heavy lifting capacity will enable the loading of additional pilsner, right?

As far as I know, there is no shortage of (free) German beer on LH flights... if you drink alcohol/beer, flying with an European airline is a highly comfortable experience... I like Y+ on UA and full 0.33L cans of coke/apple juice
There's no better way to travel than fly (shameless rip of LH's slogan ;-)

Actually, they will almost always be 355 ml cans, which equate to the larger 12 oz size that is standard here in the US
ah, silly me... still thinking in Euro measurements... well, you can take a European and put it in imperial country, but he/she will still be European. At least as far as usage of SI measurements and Euro-can sizes is concerned

I note that LH do not now operate JumboJets from MUC, so the probability that LH would operate WhaleJets from MUC is vanishingly small. It's a safe bet that all LH WhaleJets will be operated from FRA. I even doubt that LH will operate the 747-8I from MUC.
